calceolaria

Plant with brilliantly coloured slipper-shaped flowers. Native to South America, calceolarias were introduced to Europe and the USA in the 1830s. (Genus Calceolaria, family Scrophulariaceae.)

The flowers are something of a curiosity ( rounded and pouch-shaped ( giving rise to nicknames such as pouch flower, slipperwort and slipper flower.
