At a smelting plant in Asturias, Spain, molten metal is being poured into a mould. In smelting, a metallic ore is placed in a furnace in order to produce a pure metal and slag (the unwanted parts of the ore). This is usually achieved in a blast furnace, which uses a blast of preheated air.

Processing a metallic ore in a furnace to produce the metal. Oxide ores such as iron ore are smelted with coke (carbon), which reduces the ore into metal and also provides fuel for the process.

A substance such as limestone is often added during smelting to facilitate the melting process and to form a slag, which dissolves many of the impurities present.
