In World War I, artillery projectile carrying a charge of some chemical capable of producing smoke so as to form a smoke screen. Such shells almost invariably used white phosphorus since this ignited spontaneously when released and thus did not require a complicated time fuse.

A photojournalist identified as Shafat Ahmed of ANI was seriously wounded after being hit by a tear smoke shell.
Deputy army chief Major General Dan Harel told reporters on Wednesday the military used several hundred mortar shells and naval rounds that contain phosphorous as the active ingredient, as well about 3,000 smoke shells that contain pieces of felt dipped in phosphorous.
It fired white phosphorus repeatedly over densely populated areas, even when its troops weren't in the area and safer smoke shells were available.
