smooth snake

Common nonvenomous snake found in southern and central Europe. It grows to a length of 60 cm/24 in, and it is brownish-red or grey in colour, with dark-brown spots along its back. It is ovoviviparous, producing live young that free themselves from their shells immediately.

Classification

The smooth snake Coronella austriaca is in family Colubridae, suborder Serpentes, order Squamata, class Reptilia.
