sonata da chiesa

Instrumental work of the late 17th and early 18th centuries frequently, though not always, in four movements: slow introduction, fugal allegro, slow movement, and quick finale. Works of this type were written for more than one instrument, most usually two violins with continuo for bass viol or cello with a keyboard instrument, generally the organ.
