scaler

Instrument that counts the number of radioactive particles passing through a radiation detector such as a Geiger–Müller tube (the scaler and tube together form a Geiger counter). It gives the total, or cumulative, number of particles counted whereas a ratemeter gives the number of particles detected in a unit of time.
