sororate

Form of marriage in which a wife is replaced by her sister if she dies or is barren. The practice fulfils the marriage contract by supplying a woman who will bear children to inherit the husband's property and continue his lineage. The underlying idea is similar to levirate. Sororate is practised by many African peoples and among some American Indian peoples.
