souter liedekens

Metrical psalms sung in Holland to popular tunes, translated and provided with appropriate melodies by (probably) Willem van Zuylen van Nyevelt. The first complete collection, printed by Symon Cock at Antwerp in 1540, contained 159 texts: Psalm 119 was in four sections, and the Te Deum and five canticles were included.

Clemens non Papa later arranged the whole collection for three voices, published in Antwerp as the fourth-seventh of Susato's Musyck Boexken (little music books) in 1556-57. Ten settings are by Susato himself, perhaps because of Clemens's premature death. The eighth-eleventh books contained another complete setting, the work of Gerhard Mes.
