An astronaut prepares for the weightlessness of space flight in an early space-simulator. As early as the 1960s, the US and Soviet space programs attempted to replicate the conditions of space travel. However, none of them genuinely nullified the effect of the Earth's gravity.

Feeling of nausea, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, experienced by about 40% of all astronauts during their first few days in space. It is akin to travel sickness, and is thought to be caused by confusion of the body's balancing mechanism, located in the inner ear, by weightlessness. The sensation passes after a few days as the body adapts.
