In a business organization, the number of people who report directly to a particular manager. For example, a manager may be directly responsible for supervising the work of ten people. They in turn may have control over other workers lower down the hierarchy. The greater the span of control, the less likely it is that the person in charge will be able to supervise closely the work of those workers within his or her span of control.
