Sparks| Locality in Baltimore County, north Maryland, 29 km/18 mi north of central Baltimore. It is an area of developing office parks, just northwest of Loch Raven Reservoir. |
Sparks| City in western Nevada, on the Truckee River, 5 km/3 mi northeast of central Reno; population (1990) 53,400. It is a railway division point with repair shops. Tourism is now an important industry; there is also some light manufacturing. Another economic asset is the area's irrigated agriculture, principally producing hay, potatoes, and onions. |
| Sparks was founded as the western Nevada base of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It grew and prospered as a shipping point for nearby gold and silver mines. Favourable tax structures have aided in the city's development as a warehousing centre and encouraged national corporations to build facilities here. |
