Sparks

Locality in Baltimore County, north Maryland, 29 km/18 mi north of central Baltimore. It is an area of developing office parks, just northwest of Loch Raven Reservoir.

Sparks

City in western Nevada, on the Truckee River, 5 km/3 mi northeast of central Reno; population (1990) 53,400. It is a railway division point with repair shops. Tourism is now an important industry; there is also some light manufacturing. Another economic asset is the area's irrigated agriculture, principally producing hay, potatoes, and onions.

Sparks was founded as the western Nevada base of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It grew and prospered as a shipping point for nearby gold and silver mines. Favourable tax structures have aided in the city's development as a warehousing centre and encouraged national corporations to build facilities here.
