speciationEmergence of a new species during evolutionary history. One cause of speciation is the geographical separation of populations of the parent species, followed by reproductive isolation and selection for different environments so that they no longer produce viable offspring when they interbreed. Other causes are assortative mating and the establishment of a polyploid population. How to thank TFD for its existence?
