speckle interferometry

Technique whereby large telescopes can achieve high resolution of astronomical objects despite the adverse effects of the atmosphere through which light from the object under study must pass. It involves the taking of large numbers of images, each under high magnification and with short exposure times. The pictures are then combined to form the final picture. The technique was introduced by the French astronomer Antoine Labeyrie in 1970.

Although there are several techniques, such as speckle interferometry and 'lucky' imaging which not only record the two components to closer separations than that perceived by eye, but can also measure the relative position of the stars to greater precision.
Several authors [7,8] have discussed various aspects of laser-based systems in general, considering holographic [9] and moire [4] methods, laser-interferometry [10] and laser speckle interferometry [4,9] and have shown that most of them are more sensitive to the above-mentioned rigid body displacements than the laser speckle shift method, discussed in this paper.
