speaking

Communication skill that involves the formation and pronouncement of words in a coherent fashion. The skill of speaking is developed from infancy and is essential to our everyday lives, our careers, and our personal relationships.

An experienced speaker will adapt language to the intended audience and purpose. A formal debate requires more sophisticated language than an informal chat with friends.

Skills associated with speaking effectively can be divided into four main modes of speech: Narration, explanation, analysis, and persuasion.

Good speakers make use of verbal devices, such as intonation, and nonverbal body language.
