sarcoma

Malignant tumour arising from the fat, muscles, bones, cartilage, or blood and lymph vessels and connective tissues. Sarcomas are much less common than carcinomas.

13,14) Specific IHC stains, especially desmin, have helped to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and differentiate LMS from other mesodermal tumors, such as fibromas, fibrosarcomas, spindle-cell sarcomas, rhabdomyosarcoma, malignant melanomas, and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors.
Homologous sarcoma has the typical appearance of spindle-cell sarcoma, resembling high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, or undifferentiated sarcoma.
Reactivity to desmin and muscle-specific actin in spindle-cell sarcomas confirms a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma.
