nutcracker

Either of two species of bird similar to a jay, belonging to the crow family. One species is found in the Old World and the other in the New World. (Genus Nucifraga, family Corvidae, order Passeriformes.)

The species N. caryocatactes is native to Europe and Asia; the other, Clark's nutcracker (N. columbiana), 30 cm/12 in long, lives in western North America and has grey and black plumage and a powerful beak.

Nutcracker

Well-known ballet by Tchaikovsky (choreography by Lev Ivanovich Ivanov, based on a tale by E T A Hoffmann). It was first produced in St Petersburg, at the Mariinsky Theatre on 18 December 1892.
