sprain

Injury to a ligament resulting in over-stretching. The most commonly sprained joint is the ankle. Immediate symptoms are pain and loss of power in the joint, followed by swelling. Where fracture is suspected the joint should be appropriately treated. In ordinary sprains swelling can be lessened by applying cold water immediately. After the joint has swollen, however, heat should be used to ease the pain. The sprained part should be well bandaged and rested. It may take months to recover fully.
