standard form

Method of writing numbers often used by scientists, particularly for very large or very small numbers. The numbers are written with one digit before the decimal point and multiplied by a power of 10. The number of digits given after the decimal point depends on the accuracy required. For example, the speed of light is 2.9979 × 108 m/1.8628 × 105 mi per second.
