stilt

Long-legged wader bird Himantopus himantopus, order Charadriiformes. It has a very wide distribution. The name is given to these birds by reason of their very thin, long, pink legs which extend far behind the body. The stilt lives in flooded areas and swamps, particularly where there is soft mud. The species is cosmopolitan, with separate subspecies in the USA, South America, Australasia, and a wholly black subspecies found only on South Island, New Zealand.
