The Merry Maidens, close to Lamorna in Cornwall, is a ring of 19 stones dating from the Bronze Age. The name derives from various local legends that tell of young girls turned into stone after dancing on a Sunday. The Pipers, a pair of larger standing stones, can be found in fields in the same area.

Prehistoric megalith. The circles were built with standing stones, usually on level ground. Many are now partly fallen or incomplete, the stones having been removed for building. Most circles belong to the Bronze Age and probably had a ritual or astronomical function. They are mainly found in the British Isles and northwestern France, and include the impressive structures at Carnac on the west Brittany coast, France; Stonehenge and Avebury in Wiltshire, England; Callanish on the island of Lewis, and Stenness in Orkney, Scotland.
