On string instruments, notes produced by shortening the vibrating length of the string with a finger (stopping); on wind instruments, the notes are not produced naturally as harmonics, but by valves, keys, or other mechanical means. In horn playing the hand is used, originally to alter the pitch before the development of valves, but now called for by composers for their distinctive tone.
