SLR

Abbreviation for single-lens reflex, a type of camera in which the image can be seen through the lens before a picture is taken.

A small mirror directs light entering the lens to the viewfinder.

When a picture is taken the mirror moves rapidly aside to allow the light to reach the film. The SLR allows different lenses, such as close-up or zoom lenses, to be used because the photographer can see exactly what is being focused on.
