strata![]() Folded rocks in the Little Karoo, South Africa. Owing to the movements of tectonic plates, horizontal rock layers (strata) are folded or bent. The folded rock may fracture, producing lines of weakness. These weaknesses or faults are exploited by rivers and other agents of erosion, and are more easily broken down than unfractured rock.

Its light, rendered bluish by the thick strata of the atmosphere was less intense than that of the crescent moon, but it was of considerable dimensions, and looked like an enormous arch stretched across the firmament. Hitherto the various strata of rock had exhibited a gentle elevation toward the southwest, but here everything appeared to have been subverted, and thrown out of place. If we do NOT know them all--if Nature has still secrets in the deeps for us, nothing is more conformable to reason than to admit the existence of fishes, or cetaceans of other kinds, or even of new species, of an organisation formed to inhabit the strata inaccessible to soundings, and which an accident of some sort has brought at long intervals to the upper level of the ocean. |
