In computing, sending data, for example video frames or radio broadcasts, in a steady flow over the Internet. Streaming requires data to pass through a special channel or dedicated connection; conventional packets, which travel by a multiplicity of routes, may arrive in the wrong order or be duplicated on the way. Streaming is used in multimedia presentations, such as RealAudio, RealVideo, RealText, and Flash animations; it enables presentations to be commenced before files are finished downloading. The data is placed in a temporary memory area until it is downloaded.
