Chamber music ensemble consisting of two violins, two violas, and two cellos. Pieces written for string sextet include Dvořák's Op. 48, Brahms's Op. 18 and Op. 36, and Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht/Transfigured Night (1899). The prologue to Strauss's Capriccio (1940-41) is a string sextet.
