strings| In music, the cords, usually of gut (as in the violin family and harps) or wire (as in the lute, violin, and guitar families, and pianos), by means of which the notes are produced on such instruments. The term ‘strings’ is also used to designate string instruments collectively, especially those of the violin family in the orchestra. |
