grey matter

In biology, those parts of the brain and spinal cord that are made up of interconnected and tightly packed nerve cell nucleuses. The outer layers of the cerebellum contains most of the grey matter in the brain. It is the region of the brain that is responsible for advanced mental functions. Grey matter also constitutes the inner core of the spinal cord. This is in contrast to white matter, which is made of the axons of nerve cells.
