Unstated message or theme in a speech or piece of writing, conveyed in the tone of voice, choice and arrangement of words etc. The subtext can be used as a literary device, and can be important to the meaning of the work.

In theatre, according to the ideas of Russian actor Konstantin Stanislavsky and the Method school of acting, a knowledge of the character's subtext (that is, motivations and past experience) is requires to act a role correctly.
