subtraction

Taking one number or quantity away from another, or finding the difference between two quantities; it is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic. Subtraction is neither commutative:

abba

nor associative:

a − (bc) ≠ (ab) − c.

For example,

8 − 5 ≠ 5 − 8

7 − (4 − 3) ≠ (7 − 4) − 3.
