sulphur dioxide

Pungent gas produced by burning sulphur or sulphide ores in air or oxygen. It is widely used for making sulphuric acid and for disinfecting food vessels and equipment for bleaching paper, and as a preservative in some food products. It occurs in industrial flue gases and is a major cause of acid rain.

Since the 1990s, most urban areas in Europe and North America have seen a reduction in sulphur dioxide concentrations, due to changes in fuel use.
