sulphur trioxide

Colourless solid prepared by reacting sulphur dioxide and oxygen in the presence of a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst in the contact process. It reacts violently with water to give sulphuric acid.

The violence of its reaction with water makes it extremely dangerous. In the contact process, it is dissolved in concentrated sulphuric acid to give oleum (H2S2O7).

Industrial production of sulfuric acid requires that sulfur dioxide be further oxidized to give sulfur trioxide, which produces sulfuric acid when dissolved in water.
Procter and Gamble's Alexandria plant in Pineville, Louisiana, converted from oleum to "just-in-time manufacturing" of sulfur trioxide by installing a sulfur burning unit.
It also produced negligible sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide conversion, less than 0.
