Sumpter

City in east-central Oregon, 29 km/18 mi west of Baker, surrounded by the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest; population (1990) 100.

Settled by North Carolinian farmers in 1862, it became a gold mining boom town in the 1890s with a population that reached 3,000. When the ore ran out in 1916, it fell into steep decline.
