sungrebe

Any one of several species of tropical waterbird in the family Heliornithidae. Sungrebes have an elongated body with a long neck and short legs with lobed toes. The bill is pointed and the plumage drab. They feed on fish, amphibians, invertebrates, seeds, and leaves.

Males are unique in that they carry the young in pouches of skin beneath their wings and are even able to fly with the chicks safely in place. The incubation period for the eggs is only 11 days.
