Superior

Port and city in Wisconsin, USA, at the western end of Lake Superior on the St Louis and Nemadji rivers; population (1997) 27,500. Together with Duluth, Minnesota, which lies to the south across the St Louis Bay, it forms the US head of navigation on the St Lawrence Seaway, and is the shipping point for western produce reaching the lakes. Superior is one of the largest coal and grain-shipping ports in the world. It also contains the world's largest iron ore dock. Industries include the manufacture of wood products, flour, canned foods, and refined oil. The city was founded as a trading post in 1853.

It is the home of a Wisconsin State University campus, founded in 1893.
