superphosphate

Phosphate fertilizer made by treating apatite (calcium phosphate mineral) with sulphuric or phosphoric acid. The commercial mixture contains largely monocalcium phosphate. Single-superphosphate obtained from apatite and sulphuric acid contains 16–20% available phosphorus, as P2O5; triple-superphosphate, which contains 45–50% phosphorus, is made by treating apatite with phosphoric acid.
