surface survey

    0.01 sec.

surface survey

The examination of the surface of the earth for archaeological sites. Surveys can be carried out unsystematically, involving field walking in areas where the archaeologists feel sites will be found, scanning the ground along their path and recording the location of artefacts and surface features. In contrast, systematic survey divides the area into a grid, and a sample of its sectors are walked, making this survey more representative of the whole and therefore more accurate.
