symmetric-key cryptography

System of cryptography whereby both sender and recipient have identical digital ‘keys’ used to encrypt and decrypt messages. Although simpler and faster than public-key cryptography, this method depends on the secure transmission of a key to the recipient before an encrypted message can be read. The most popular example of symmetric-key cryptography is the Data Encryption Standard (DES), used by the US government.
