crossing over

In biology, a process that occurs during meiosis. While homologous chromosomes are lying alongside each other in pairs, each partner may twist around the other and exchange corresponding chromosomal segments. It is a form of genetic recombination, which increases variation and thus allows offspring to vary from their parents.
