taille

In pre-revolutionary France, either of two forms of taxation. The personal taille, levied from the 15th century, was assessed by tax collectors on the individual's personal wealth. Nobles, clerics, and many other groups were exempt from this tax and its burden fell disproportionately on the peasantry. During a similar period the ‘real’ taille was levied on common land in central and southwestern France and produced more revenue for the crown.

In music, the tenor part in a vocal and instrumental ensemble, applied particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries to the viola and the oboe da caccia.
