holy orders

Christian priesthood, as conferred by the laying on of hands by a bishop. It is held by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican churches to have originated in Jesus' choosing of the apostles.

The Roman Catholic Church includes among holy orders bishop, priest, deacon, subdeacon, acolyte, exorcist, reader, and door-keeper, and, outside the priesthood, tertiary.
