Tamale

Town and capital of Northern Region, northeastern Ghana, 450 km/280 mi north of Accra and 50 km/31 mi from the northern tip of Lake Volta; population (2000) 293,900. It is a centre for civil engineering and education, and a commercial centre which deals in rice, cotton, and peanuts. It is at the junction of roads from Accra in the south, Togo in the east, and Burkina Faso in the north. An airfield and the Mole Game Reserve is nearby.
