Tanga

Seaport and capital of Tanga region, Tanzania, northeast of Zanzibar, on the Indian Ocean; population (2002) 180,200. After Dar es Salaam, it is Tanzania's second largest port, and trades in sisal, fruit, cocoa, tea, and fish; industries include cement production. It was once the terminus of caravan routes leading into the interior of Africa, and is now the coastal terminus of the railway to Moshi and Arusha.

A British seaborne attack on German forces here in 1915, during the East Africa campaign in World War I, was a complete failure, but the port was occupied by the British in 1916.
