loudness

Subjective judgement of the level or power of sound reaching the ear. The human ear cannot give an absolute value to the loudness of a single sound, but can only make comparisons between two different sounds. The precise measure of the power of a sound wave at a particular point is called its intensity. Accurate comparisons of sound levels may be made using sound-level meters, which are calibrated in units called decibels.
