telomere

Chromosome tip. Telomeres prevent chromosomes sticking together. Like DNA they are made up of nucleotides, usually rich in thymine and guanine. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres shorten. They trigger the cell's senescence (inability to reproduce) when they reach a threshold length. This process is prevented from happening during the replication of cancer cells by the presence of the enzyme telomerase. Telomerase replaces the segments of the telomeres, maintaining their length so that cell replication is no longer controlled.
