Tempe

City in south-central Arizona, on the Salt River, a suburb 14 km/9 mi southeast of central Phoenix; population (1990) 141,900. It is a residential centre with light industry. The climate attracts health seekers and retired citizens. Agriculture, irrigated by the Salt River Project, is important in the area.

Named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, the settlement was founded in 1872 and grew up around a trading post, flour mill, and ferry. Arizona State University (1885) has been central to Tempe's life; US architect Frank Lloyd Wright's Grady Gammage Auditorium (1964) and noted art and geology museums are on campus.

The 72,000-seat Sun Devil Stadium is home to the university football team and the National Football League's Phoenix Cardinals.
