Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Legal, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.01 sec. |
budUndeveloped shoot usually enclosed by protective scales; inside is a very short stem and numerous undeveloped leaves, or flower parts, or both. Terminal buds are found at the tips of shoots, while axillary buds develop in the axils of the leaves, often remaining dormant unless the terminal bud is removed or damaged. Adventitious buds may be produced anywhere on the plant, their formation sometimes stimulated by an injury, such as that caused by pruning. How to thank TFD for its existence? In biology, where would you find the terminal bud - at the tip or the base of a plant? When that terminal bud is damaged or removed, new signals respond by releasing dormant buds into service to replace the missing canopy. Long flower spikes, upwards of 300 mm (12in) long appear from mid-October onwards from the terminal buds at the top of each main stem and, as the flowers open, they give off a beautiful scent, attracting small birds in to drink the nectar and late-flying bees to take advantage of the free food supply. |
