thalassaemia

Any of a group of chronic hereditary blood disorders that are widespread in the Mediterranean countries, Africa, the Far East, and the Middle East. They are characterized by an abnormality of the red blood cells and bone marrow, with enlargement of the spleen. The genes responsible are carried by about 100 million people worldwide. The diseases can be diagnosed prenatally.

ACTIVISTS are demanding a Health Ministry probe into the death of a thalassaemia patient at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC).
The campaign was organized in association with the Blood Bank Department at Al Wasl Hospital, and blood collected during the drive will be donated to the Hospital's Thalassaemia Center.
London, October 3 (ANI): Reports indicate that a scanning technique developed by British scientists can cut thalassaemia deaths by 70 percent.
