aversion therapy

Type of behaviour therapy designed to inhibit the occurrence of certain undesirable habits. It involves delivering an unpleasant stimulus, such as a weak electric shock, in association with some manifestation of the deviant behaviour - for example, filling a glass in alcoholism. It is hoped that repetition of this treatment will set up an aversion to the undesired behaviour.
