tiara

Triple crown worn by the pope, or a semicircular headdress worn by women on formal occasions.

The papal triple crown is a symbol of sovereign power (not sacred like the mitre), a high cap of gold cloth or metal, encircled by three coronets and surmounted by a gold cross. The women's jewelled head ornament, usually of precious metal or diamonds, dates from a Napoleonic court fashion. It is worn on the forepart of the head, often beginning in a foliage or scroll design at the sides of the head and rising to a higher central group.

The term was originally applied to a headdress worn by the ancient Persians. Diadems of flat bands of gold links were found in the ruins of Troy, and elaborate gold headdresses dating from 3500 BC were found in the tombs of the Chaldaean kings.
