tiger beetle

Brightly coloured beetle with long legs and antennae. The most striking feature is their large eyes. Most adult tiger beetles are in shades of blue, bronze, or green, with yellow or white markings. They are typically found on sand or dry soils. Some 2,000 species have been recorded, mostly in the tropics.

The adults move rapidly and fly readily. The larvae live in burrows in the soil, where they lie in wait with their powerful mandibles, or jaws, ready to grab any insect that passes by.

Classification

Tiger beetles are members of the family Cicindelidae, order Coleoptera, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda. The main genus is Cicindela.
